New CDNs are popping up left and right and it has never been easier to host complete OTT solution in a rented cloud environment. Should you even consider hosting servers and building your own system from scratch?

Complex nature of IPTV system puts on a demanding challenge for the delivery network. You need good response time for quick zapping and UI updates and stable throughput for video streaming. If your ecosystem is placed over a wide area, you have to bring edge servers as close to the customers as possible, increasing the running costs as you go.

When the system is running only inside your own network, build-it-yourself solution is a way to go. But when the customer base expands over that, the new choice presents itself: you could either build your own system which gives you total control (and responsibility), or rent capacity at someone like Akamai or Amazon.

The first solution gives you the flexibility when building the system, while renting will give you quick and easy access to customers from almost anywhere. Practice shows that you should invest in your own system if you have enough users concentrated in certain areas, and rent cloud capacity for more dispersed customer base.
